The Korea Legislation Research Institute (President: Rhee Ik Hyeon) jointly held an academic conference with the Korea Environmental Law Association, and the Yonsei University-SSK Climate Change and International Law Center under the subject of 'Current Situation and Challenges of Nuclear Safety Legislation pursuant to Policies for Future Energy Conversion' in the international conference room of Gwangbokg Building, Yonsei University, on October 5th.
In this academic conference, effective legislative alternatives have been discussed to be consistent with policies for future energy conversion promoted by the Korean Government, which are related to nuclear safety legislation, where around 50 nuclear professionals attended.
The academic conference included presentations and discussions on: policies and legal challenges for nuclear safety of the Republic of Korea; prospect and legal challenges on dismantlement and closure of nuclear power plants; and legal challenges on the construction and safety of radioactive waste treatment facilities.
Son Myung Sun, director of Nuclear Regulatory Bureau, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, Kim Jong Cheon and Lee Eu Bong, members of the Korea Legislation Research Institute, and Cho Chun-Hyung, manager of the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency attended the conference as presenters and debaters.
Rhee Ik Hyeon, President of the Korea Legislation Research Institute, said "it is required to review thoroughly the nuclear legal system for preparing dangerous situation in nuclear power plants which may happen due to earthquake and others, and also for considering economical ripple effects which may occur due to energy policies shifted by the Korean Government."
Meanwhile, the Korea Legislation Research Institute conducts legislative research for preparing reasonable regulations necessary for establishing plans, safety criteria and eco-friendly treatment with regard to suspension and dismantlement of facilities of nuclear power plants, and for bearing costs incurred by post-processing.
