KLRI jointly held Academic Conference with Unification and North Korean Law Studies

The Korea Legislation Research Institute (President: Rhee Ik-hyeon) jointly held an academic conference with the Unification and North Korean Law Studies under the subject of ‘70 Years in Establishment of North Korean Regime and Prospects on Change in North Korean Laws’ in Oak Room of The Plaza Seoul from 1:30 pm on Nov. 23th (Fri).
 
As North Korea's opening is expected due to improved inter-Korean relations, this academic conference was prepared to review the changes in constitutional, civil and criminal laws, which are major laws of North Korea, and based on those review, to gain implications in domestic legal preparations.
 
The academic conference was segmented into three session, attended by around 70 experts of North Korean laws participants, including Rhee Ik-hyeon, President of the Korea Legislation Research Institute, and Shin Young-ho, President of the Unification and North Korean Law Studies, and subjects for discussion of each session were 70 years in establishment of North Korean regime and prospects on change in constitutional, criminal and civil laws of North Korea.
 
Ryu Ji-sung, deputy member of the Korea Legislation Research Institute, Park Jung-won, dean of the School of Law at Kookmin University, and Lee Baek-kyu, chief judge of Seoul Central District Court participated in presentations and discussions.
 
Rhee Ik-hyeon, President of the Korea Legislation Research Institute, said "As the era of inter-Korean cooperation opens, the North Korean legal system seems to be shifting to more openness and changing to the rule of law" and continued, “When we properly analyze the North Korean laws at this time and look for counter-strategies base on those analysis, it is expected that the peace of North and South Korea will be further strengthened on the institutional basis.”
 
Meanwhile, the Korea Legislation Research Institute accumulates North Korea legislative materials for preparing the unification of South and North Korea and conducts legislative research for inter-Korean exchange and cooperation and research on legal systems of transition economies.
