KLRI Held Academic Conference on Latest Trends and Implications of Cooperatives Act

The Korea Legislation Research Institute (President: Rhee Ik Hyeon) held an academic conference under the theme of “Latest Trends and Implications of Cooperatives Act: the Cooperatives Act of Portugal and Spain” at the auditorium of the National Assembly Library, from 1 pm on March 26th (Tuesday).
 
This academic conference was prepared to draw implications  necessary for legislation reform on cooperatives in the Republic of Korea, referring to examples of major countries including Spain and Portugal that have advanced legislation in relation to cooperatives.
 
The conference began with a welcome speech by Rhee Ik Hyeon, President of KLRI as well as a congratulatory address by Kim Jung Ho, a Democratic Party lawmaker, followed by keynote speeches by experts from Portugal and Spain and presentations by experts in the Republic of Korea.
 
Keynote speeches were given by Delinda Meira, Professor of Accounting and Administrative College, University of Portugal on “Characteristics and Impact of the Cooperatives Legal System in Portugal,” and Isabel Gemma Fajardo Garcia, Professor of University of Valencia on “Position of a Cooperative Corporation in the Spanish Cooperatives Law in Comparison with Other Forms of Business.”
 
In subsequent presentations, Kim Hyung Mi, Director in Chief of iCOOP Cooperative Institute spoke about “Legislative Cases of Major Countries Related to Cooperatives” and Park Kwang Dong, member of the KLRI, on “Implications of Cooperative Legal System in Portugal and Spain.”
 
KLRI President Lee said, “It is necessary to recognize the specificity of cooperatives and to seek a legal system that can accommodate them. Thus, through this academic event, we will try to identify implications for reforming the legal system governing the cooperatives in the Republic of Korea.”
 
Meanwhile, the Korea Legislation Research Institute has been conducting“Research on Legal System related to Cooperatives in Major Countries.” Based on this research, the KLRI plans to propose the direction for amending the Framework Act on Cooperatives, which is eight years into its enforcement. The KLRI seeks to analyze problems lying in the legal system related to the Act through comparison with relevant statutes of advanced countries.
